Crawling:-

A search engine employs special software robots, called spiders, to build lists of the words found on Web sites. When a spider is building its lists, the process is called Web crawling.

Crawling is the process by which search engines discovers new and updated pages to be added to their database

Search engines use a huge set of computers to crawl billions and trillions of pages automatically.They use computer softwares to determine which site to crawl, How often,& How many pages from a site to crwal.

The crawl process begins with a list of web page URLs, generated from previous crawl processes, and augmented with Sitemap data provided by webmasters. As bot visits of each these websites it detects links on each page and adds them to its list of pages to crawl. New sites, changes to existing sites, and dead links are noted and used to update the search engine database.

All major search engines do not accept payments for crwaling the websites(Except Yahoo!).Instead they have a separate search engine Advertising programs.

Indexing:

Indexing is the process in which search engines will process the pages that were crawled by them and identify different keywords,phrases etc. on the page.

NOW FROM AN SEO’s POINT OF VIEW:

It is necessary that your page is crawled and indexed by search engines, otherwise your pages will not appear in the search engines.
